With Safe System Solutions, Tasmania Police, and motorcycling stakeholders

The following day stakeholders attended a Safe System workshop in Launceston to discuss the findings of the safety audit and to identify potential countermeasures to address motorcyclist safety on the Lake Leake Road. Recommendations to improve motorcyclist safety on the Lake Leake Road will be presented to RSAC in a future paper.

Tasmania Police 27th November 2018 trial Unmarked Motorcycle, The motorcycle is a Triumph Tiger 800 XRx (black).  The motorcycle is fitted with lights (covert), siren and speed detection radar. Riders will be fitted with helmet-mounted video cameras – the first such use by road police in Tasmania.  Use of a helmet-mounted camera will:

  • Enable evidence of the offence to be captured on video – this will significantly reduce the number of appeals, and
  • Enable the rider to choose not to intercept (e.g. too dangerous, unacceptable disruption to commuters) but still capture evidence of the offence.

After the first 3 months it exceeded expectations and has now been expanded to the North and North West of Tasmania.

Motorcycle Training

Since the introduction of the new training of motorcyclists there has been a marked reduction in MAIB claims, as you can see by the figures below.

With these figures showing the decrease of claims, the TMC has requested the government raise the speed which novice motorcycle riders can do to the same as applies to novice car drivers. Which would also increase novice rider safety?

May 2019 State Growth asked the TMC to do an audit on the Great Eastern Drive for some motorcycle infrastructure improvements to be identified. Completed and handed to state growth.

We have a new minister for Infrastructure Hon Michael Ferguson, we have arranged a meeting with the minister in September.
