As part of its election commitments, the Hodgman Government pledged $40,000 funding per year (for 4 years) for the Trail Bike Initiative. The main purpose of the funding is to encourage riding in legal areas and to reduce illegal trail bike riding. The funding is to be used to assist with public liability and insurance costs for new facilities or to stage events.

As well as being a public nuisance, unlicenced riders account for an average of 13.6 serious motorcycle casualties a year (11 fatalities from 2004-2013). Of the serious casualties, 16% occurred off-road, with 72% of riders aged under 24.

The Tasmanian Motorcycle Council (TMC) is pleased to support initiatives which give riders of all ages the opportunity to ride in a safe environment. Given the high percentage of youth involved in off-road incidents, events which cater for younger riders are of particular importance.
